Perched atop the Kienberg in Berlin-Marzahn, the Wolkenhain (“Cloud Grove”) is a unique architectural landmark that was created for the International Garden Show in 2017. This modern viewing platform offers sweeping views over Berlin and the surrounding Brandenburg countryside, becoming a must-visit destination for both locals and tourists looking to experience Berlin from a different angle.

A Cloud-Inspired Architectural Marvel

Designed to resemble a floating cloud, the Wolkenhain features a delicate, light structure that stands approximately 20 meters high. Positioned on the summit of the Kienberg, the platform reaches a total elevation of around 120 meters above sea level. On a clear day, visitors can enjoy visibility up to 50 kilometers away, with a clear view of the Berlin TV Tower, which is about 12 kilometers distant. Informative signs along the walkway provide details about notable landmarks visible from the observation point, inviting visitors to discover Berlin’s urban landscape in an entirely new way.

A Play of Light and Colors

The Wolkenhain is constructed from around 170 steel nodes and is covered with a translucent membrane, giving it a light, transparent appearance that seems to change with the surrounding light. At dusk and on special occasions, the platform is illuminated in various colors. The lighting can be controlled to complement the natural light, making the structure appear as if it is seamlessly blending into its environment.

Reaching for the Clouds

Originally part of the 2017 International Garden Exhibition (IGA), the Wolkenhain has been freely accessible to the public since the event concluded. Visitors can reach this unique viewing platform either by taking a scenic cable car ride or by walking up the hill. The ascent to the platform itself is accessible via both a staircase and a barrier-free elevator, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the stunning views.
