Established in 1844, the Berlin Zoological Garden was the brainchild of renowned naturalists Alexander von Humboldt and Martin Lichtenstein. With over 1,400 species and more than 18,600 animals spread across 80 acres, it ranks among the most species-rich zoos worldwide. Notable past residents include the famous polar bear Knut, who captured hearts globally from 2006 until his passing in 2011.

The zoo’s grounds were designed with the help of landscape architect Peter Joseph Lenné, alongside master builders who created iconic structures such as the Antelope House (1872) and the Persian Tower (1910). The zoo’s two entrances, the Lion Gate on Hardenbergplatz and the Elephant Gate on Budapester Straße, are architectural gems from around 1900, adding a historical charm to the park.
